our mission statement
We are a core group of parents, families, teachers, administrators, community members and organizations, who are committed to the academic success and awareness of our African American Student body. We assist in support, literacy, resource development, and overall inclusion of the school community in the enrichment, engagement and social development of African American children in the community.
One of the many responsibilities of the Fairmont Elementary School AAPAC is to provide advice and requests to the school principal and staff on programs and services that improve academic outcomes for African American students in our community.

WHY IS AAPAC SO IMPORTANT?
There is a significant achievement and opportunity gap which separates African American students from other young Americans.
Evidence from previous research suggests that children whose parents are involved in their schooling and education have a significantly higher potential for academic achievement and cognitive development.
Regardless of income or background, students with involved parents are more likely to earn higher grades, enroll in higher-level programs, develop enhanced social skills and behaviors and adaptability. They are also more likely to graduate with a school diploma and continue pursuits in post-secondary education.

Community Collaboration
We will provide opportunities through events and activities to connect with the local community and to engage potential advocates of our mission and other like-minded parents. Our hope is that we will generate strong community partnerships and group forums, bringing together school staff, local agencies and community resources to collaborate on and tackle the challenges African American children face.

Advocacy
It is important that families gain a sense of advocacy for African American children and families. Recognizing that there are many ways to approach advococy, we hope to share information with our school community, promoting policies about civil rights, school discipline and respect, children’s health and safety, and special needs assistance .

School Site Support
It is important that we engage parents in children’s educational progress. We encourage communication with school staff and involvement in programs like the family reading experience or academic parent-teacher teams and strive to remove barriers that limit improvement and success. One of our goals is to help families make education a priority. This includes having discussions with parents and children about the value of learning, advantages of staying in school, and opportunities that open with a high school diploma.
